William Katavolos

William Katavolos is Professor of Architecture at Pratt Intsitute in New York where he is co-director of the Center for Experimental Structures. He has a distiguished career as a designer, teacher and futurist. His designs for furniture are in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Louvre in Paris. He is widely recognized in the press including an exclusive interview in The New Yorker Magazine in 2004 and a comprehensive review of his architecture in Domus Magazine in April of 2005. His theory of the fundamental structure of nature is being prepared for publication. He lives with his wife, Terenia in Key West and New York.

William McDonough is an internationally renowned designer and one of the primary proponents and shapers of what he and his partners call "the Next Industrial Revolution." Time magazine recognized him in 1999 as a "Hero for the Planet", stating that "his utopianism is grounded in a unified philosophy that -in demonstrable and practical ways- is changing the design of the world." Since becoming in 1996 the first and only individual to receive the Presidential Award for Sustainable Development, the nation's highest environmental honor, Mr. McDonough earned the U.S. EPA Presidental Green Chemistry Challenge Award as a member of the EcoWorx development team for Shaw Industries. Most recently, he received the National Design Award for exemplary achievement in the field of environmental design. Presented annually by the Smithsonian's Cooper Hewitt, National Design Museum, an award recognizing "excellence, innovation and lasting achievement."

The home for this new cultural institution museum in the Appalachian Piedmont merges the built and natural landscapes on a dramatic site overlooking the Catawba River. Visitors will explore the natural, cultural, and social history of the site and the region through a series of pavilions that highlight the setting and embody the exhibition themes found within.
